The Top 500 Best-Selling Albums of All Time

Originally I was interested in the best-selling albums of all time because I was curious if today’s artists are less popular than the artists my father grew up listening to. This is a complicated question, but I am satisfied with my answer (hint: the internet did NOT kill the superstar).

Note how the downward trend in mega-albums began in the 1990s prior to the mass adoption of the internet

But while trying to answer that question I discovered another cool use for the data: identifying which popular albums my father likely listened to as a young adult.

It has been a real joy to connect with my father on and through music from his adolescence. I like to play an album while we are driving somewhere and wait for the recognition to dawn on his face, sometimes we talk about it, sometimes we just jam out. Not all of the albums have been ‘good’, but I’ve found those to be equally interesting to ask about (like “did people actually listen to more Bob Marley than Billy Joel?!” and “what the hell is ‘Meatloaf’?!)

So to help you connect with people in your life through music, I built a simple file that takes someone’s age and highlights the Top 500 Albums released during their adolescence (arbitrarily determined by me to be 15-22).
